Case Study 6/8/2016 Working On Other Online Teaching Platforms Part 1

Hello everyone and welcome to yet another online teaching case study! In this week’s case study, we are going to be discussing Skillshare and creating courses other than Udemy!

Recently I have been uploading a lot of my courses onto other platforms, especially Skillshare. Skillshare is a subscription based online learning platform that allows premium users to access our courses. You can also create “free courses” that allow students to enroll anyone to enroll in your course for free!  Here is what my profile looks like after 3 days of starting on Skillshare!

So what are the advantages of working with Skillshare? Once you course has been approved it seems to be completely 100% passive income. There is not a whole lot of “student interaction” or “sending emails/answering questions”. However, Skillshare does have a “project” requirement for every course. Here is what that looks like!

Skillshare also pays its instructors with paypal and with a 50% 50% revenue share split. Its different because it’s a subscription based company, so here is some of the details below!

Overall I think trying and seeing how Skillshare works for you is a great opportunity to grow your online teaching business and earn some passive income as well!

Case Study 5/18/2016 Keywords and Search Terms For Online Instructors!

Hello everyone and welcome to yet another online teaching case study! In this week’s case study, we are going to be discussing Keywords and Search Terms For Online Instructors!

Last night I just received an email from a student who visited my website. He said that it was a little difficult navigating around my course and he needed a “search” bar to find the courses he was looking for. This made me think of an excellent topic to discuss in this weeks case study!

How many sales are you losing out on because your course is not being found by the right students?! This is why keywords and search terms are very important to your online teaching success. So what are some great keywords and search terms to use when thinking about your title and subtitles in your next courses?

Here is a list of some of th most searched for terms on Google:

Weather, Translate, Maps, Calculator, News, Youtube, Restaurants, Movies, Calendar, Speed Test

Now, these are pretty random and may not be applicable to our online courses, but lets look a level deeper and explore why these terms are being searched.

Most people are looking for instant results and answers. This is why people will search for weather on their computers. Also, weather is something that is important to a lot of people! So when it comes to creating headlines, titles, and descriptions for your online courses, think about what your student is going to NEED and also is IMPORTANT to them!

Here are some examples from my best selling courses:

The Complete PHP Course With Bootstrap3 CMS System & Admin Panel

The Complete Online Teaching Masterclass: Teach Online Today!

The Complete Android Developer Course: Beginner To Advanced!

Using these three examples I have the keywords “The Complete” in every example. Why? This tells students that the course is very comprehensive! When students search for courses they want something complete and comprehensive. Also, I use words like Android, Teach, Masterclass PHP Course, Ect. So that students who use these keywords will be more likely to find my courses as well.

It is important to understand and using as many “keywords” that people are commonly searching for in order to get the best results possible! I suggest using google trends to help you with the most common keywords and think hard about which keywords your courses will use to stand out from!

Hello everyone and welcome to yet another online teaching case study! In this week’s case study, we are going to be discussing Udemy Hot Topics and how to create your next bestselling course

Mentioned in last week’s blog, Last month (APRIL 2016) Has been my slowest month on Udemy (revenue wise) In the past 6 months!

1)    The Course is A “Hot Topic

This means that there are a lot of people looking to enroll in the course and the subject is in demand. An example would by me PHP or Android courses which have over 20,000+ students enrolled in them!

2)    100+ Good reviews

We have discussed how the review system has changed and now more than ever it is very important to have more than 100+ positive reviews. This is because the volume of reviews being written are increasing! So we need to increase our positive reviews. How do we do this? Check out my previous blog article!

3)    Course discussions & Minutes viewed are being generated every weeks

Udemy is moving torward looking at the data in your courses! Specifically those course who have a lot of discussions being generated and minutes being watched! Youtube does the exact same thing and I thing Udemy is moving toward using this as a benchmark as well!

Case Study 5/2/2016 APRIL SALES ON UDEMY

Hello everyone and welcome to yet another online teaching case study! In this week’s case study, we are going to be discussing APRIL SALES and why Udemy has been slow. In this case study I will be discussing 3 main areas: Opportunity, Creating new courses, and where to start marketing!

 

 

Last month (APRIL 2016) Has been my slowest month on Udemy (revenue wise) In the past 6 months! Now, there are many factors that have gone into this slow month, but should this be a cause for concern? Well, it depends on how you look at it.

11) There is more opportunity now on Udemy to earn even MORE money if you have an extremely popular high end course! Why? Because the average for our courses will be reaching a higher price point. All of my courses (on average) sold well below $20.00. So now that my courses are at a higher pricepoint, this means that in time that will become the new baseline! It will take time for Udemy’s student base to adjust to this (as anything new takes time) however, in a month or two more in the future when they do adjust we will be reaping the benefits.

22) Creating new courses is the best thing you can do right now! The more courses you create today will only help you in your revenues and sales in the future! This is my main goal right now and I will continue to grow and create new courses!

33)  Marketing: Youtube Marketing is something I am going to be perusing heavily this month and next! Stay tuned for more updates and strategies in future case studies.

Case Study 4/25/2016 Mastermind Group Recap!

Hello Everyone,
Welcome to another online teaching case study! Today I am writing this case study from more than 30,000 feet in the air! I have been very blessed to have been doing a lot of traveling and this past week I was in Tempe, Arizona and Las Vegas, Nevada!
Last week I know we discussed mastermind groups and how powerful they can be. This week I will discuss how my latest mastermind went! The group call was on google hangout which seems to be very easy for everyone to use. It is an excellent free tool and I would highly suggest using it for your next mastermind!
So what did we learn from our mastermind?
1) We learned that there are a lot of like-minded individuals who are looking to learn, improve, and grow their businesses. It is always awesome to meet new people with different perspectives and have different experiences.
2) I was able to learn more about google adwords and google analytics and how to track my sales as an online teacher. This is key to any business and very effective in the online world.
3) I was able to make new friends and collaborate with existing ones. This has opened my mind to new possibilities and I am very excited for the future!

Case Study 4/11/2016 How To Get Your Course Approved On Udemy

Hello everyone and welcome to yet another online teaching case study! In this week’s case study, we are going to be discussing:
How To Get Your Course Approved By The Udemy Review Team!
Recently I have been creating many new courses and had difficulty getting a course approved by the review team. In fact, it took the team more than 2 weeks for them to approve our course. Let me share with you my experience and how persistence can help you launch your very next online video course!
1) First, it is important to know that the Udemy review team does a very good job in screening our courses. However, they do sometimes get overloaded and need us as instructors to do our best to stay patient, but also persistent.
On average the review team takes about 2-3 business days to respond to your course once you submit it for review. In my last courses case, it took about 10+ business days. So, on day 5 I decided to send Udemy support and email. They got back to me saying they were looking into it. It was then another 3-4 business days where nothing happened and there was no response. So I decided to persistently send them another email. Again it took them a few days to respond, but once they did the course went live within a matter of hours!
Now, when working with the review team members and Udemy support it is important to be as helpful as possible when it comes to getting your course approved! Here is an example from my course!

Since I was able to execute and be helpful the review team was able to put my course in the new and noteworthy section and the course is doing very well now because of it!

Case Study 4/4/2016 Green Screen Essentials!

Hello everyone and welcome to yet another online teaching case study! In this week’s case study, we are going to be discussing: How To Use A Green Screen To Create Amazing Videos!
Recently I have been learning how to create better videos for my online students. Using a green screen is an awesome tool and it can be very engaging! We will be discussing 3 specific tops in this post:
1)   How to buy a green screen and lighting kit
2)   Setting up your green screen and lighting equipment
3)   How to shoot and edit your green screen videos!
Let’s get started!
1)   How to buy a green screen and lighting kit
So where do I suggest you go to buy your green screen? The internet of course! In fact my green screen only cost me about $20.00 from Amazon (after shipping and handling!)

Now, it is also very important that you are able to light your entire green screen! This way you do not get shadows or “spots” when you record your video. This is why I have purchased two “Cow-Boy Studio” lighting kits! For only $50.00 each, these were a great investment!

2) Setting up your green screen and lighting equipment:
So when it all of your equipment arrives at your doorstep just go ahead and start unwrapping it!
**IMPORTANT**
Before you hang up or put your green screen against a wall, make sure you STEAM it and to get all of the creases out! You do not want your green screen to have any creases because it they will show up in your video and it will not look very professional!
Pro Tip: I actually went to my local dry cleaners and had them professional press my green screen. It looked amazing and only cost me $7.00!
Now, once you have everything out of the boxes and are ready to put things together, I wanted to make the suggestion you keep your lights “semi” close and also at all different angles shooting at the green screen. This will allow enough light to hit the green screen and also reduce shadows! I have lights on all sides, above me, and even a little behind me! However, you will have to see what works best for you! But just my suggestion J
4)   Once you have everything set up its now time to start filming your videos!
I personally use a Cannon HD camcorder because I think the quality looks better, but you can use a webcam or iMac camera. The results will differ depending on which camera you use. Now, once you film yourself against the green screen you will need to edit your videos!

Using iMove/ Camtasia, After Effects, or Final Cut Pro will easily allow you to use the green screen effect you are looking for. All you have to do is overlay a your original green screen video with a background of your choice and poof! Your video will instantly be transformed!  See Below!

Case Study 3/28/2016 Writing Your Course Summary!

Hello everyone and welcome to yet another online teaching case study! In this weeks case study, we are going to be discussing: Your Udemy Course Summary & Course Goals! 
In this weeks case study I am going to show you some of the best examples I have seen on Udemy and also why they are very effective! I am also going to show you my own course summaries and how you can model your course summary after mine!
Let’s get started!
Recently I was watching a youtube video by one of the top paid individual instructors here on Udemy, Alun Hill. In his video, Alun breaks down what has been working for his own course summaries on Udemy! Here is what Alun discusses:
#1) Udemy suggest that we have a minimum, yes minimum, of 300 words for our course summary. Now, I personally believe that sometimes “less is more” meaning is someone really going to read a 5,000 word course summary? Well, the answer is YES they actually probably are if they are really interested in enrolling in the course! This means it is critical to add in as much as we can to our course summary page (without overdoing it folks). Here is an example from my Bestselling Confidence and Self-Esteem Course! As you will notice I have added multiple positive reviews and have been very detailed about what my students are going to receive by enrolling in this course!

#2) Don’t just write anything! Make it actionable
Now, it is important to drive home the point that you need to make your course summary very actionable and inspiring! Don’t just write things and mark things down to get your “word count” up. It’s important for your works to have meaning and to help your students make the decision to enroll in your fabulous course!
#3) Make sure to include Udemy’s 30 Day Money Back Guarantee in Your Course Summary!

Udemy offers each one of its students a 30 day money back guarantee when they enroll in your courses. This is a major advantage that you should make your students very aware of! — “But Joe, if people know they can get their money back, wont this lead to more refunds?” The answer is “not really!” in fact, every month my refunds have been less than 3% of my total sales! However, knowing that students can get their money back, no questions asked, provides them a safety net and encourages them to take the risk and enroll in your course!

#4) Make sure to include your total student count and reviews!
This is a great social proof marketing tool and at the very top of each of my personal courses I include total students enrolling in my courses and how many positive reviews I have received! Case Study 3/21/16 Why Traveling Helps Your Online Teaching!

Hello everyone and welcome to yet another online teaching case study! In this weeks case study, we are going to be discussing: Why Traveling Helps Your Online Teaching! 
I will be discussing and showing you specific examples from my own traveling experience! Here I am in beautiful Orange Country California!

So why am I sharing my own ​personal traveling story here with you today? Because traveling has enhanced my online teaching 100 fold!
In fact, some of my best selling online video courses have been from videos shot all around the world!
Recently I have discovered how easy it is to create high quality videos simply using my iPhone 6S plus! I simply plugged in my microphone, fired up my FiLMMIC PRO App (available for only $10.00 on the app store) and grabbed my “selfie stick” and I was instantly able to create awesome videos!
 Here is a screenshot from a video I filmed on the beach this weekend!
In addition to creating high quality videos while traveling, showing your students around new environments stimulates their learning and inspires them to learn more! I know from personal experience that when I saw an instructor teaching from a “cool” location, it inspired me to create that lifestyle for myself!
And Well, it looks like I am on the right track :)
What is also so great about traveling is that it enhances your worldly view. With over 100,000+ students now from over 185 countries world wide, its important for me as an instructor to get out their and see the world (as best as I can) through my students eyes! The best way to do this is to get out their and start traveling!
This weekend I was able to visit Orange County, Los Angels, Palm Springs, Tempe, and Phoenix all in the same week! Its amazing how different things are even from just one state to another! I have also been able to travel to Greece, Hawaii, Canada, Mexico, The Bahamas, St. Thomas, St. Martin, and many other places!

Case Study 3/14/2016 An Understanding of “Why” To Teach Online Today!

​Hello everyone and welcome to yet another online teaching case study! In this weeks case study, we are going to be discussing something a little different. We are going to be talking about “Why” To Teach Online. 
This post will be a little different than our last ones, but I think it is very important to discuss where education is headed and where it is now!
Let’s dive in! 
For the past 3 and a half years I have been teaching in the high school classroom. I have a licensed teaching degree in history and psychology from Coe College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
Technology has really taken over in the classroom and every student seems to have a smartphone, ipad, or something that connects to the internet.
In the past year our school (any many others) have invested in “Chromebooks” for each student to have available in every classroom. A Chromebook does not have a hard drive, but it allows our students to access google classroom and work on their homework/projects/daily assignments anytime, anywhere!
So why is this so important? I believe there is a massive shift in education happening right now, especially in the classroom! Students are learning and have access to more information than ever before. The simple go to class and listen to a lecture just isn’t cutting it and students are logging on and watching videos now more than every before!
This leads me to believe that if you are in the field of education (or you want to be) being able to have the skill of creating high quality videos is an extremely important skill to have!
I believe that online education is the future for our education and you will begin to see more and more “teaching online” from our formal universities and high schools.
So if you have not started teaching online yet there is no better time to do so! The best way to get started is to just begin taking action! One step at a time, day by day, and eventually you will have built something for the world to enjoy. Case Study 3/7/2016 Udemy’s New Pricing System!

I will be discussing three major topics in this blog post. The three main areas we will be discussing in this post are:
1) My reaction to the new pricing system and how it will affect my own courses moving forward
2) March 2016 Promotion Strategies and when to change the prices of your Udemy courses
3) Pricing strategies for the future and beyond here on Udemy!

1) My reaction to the new Udemy Pricing System
My first reaction to the new pricing system was complete “shock and disbelief”. “Only $50 as a maximum? $20 minimum? Seems like such a small range and wont everyone choose the same prices now?”
But once I did my research and read more as to “why” Udemy was doing this, I began to understand and think that it will benefit everyone moving forward! Incase you have not heard about the new pricing system, here is the email sent out by CEO Dennis Yang March 2nd, 2016:
“Hello Instructors,
Over the past few months, we have spoken with many of you on the phone and in person. Thank you for sharing with us. One topic has come up again and again throughout these conversations: our pricing. In this email I’ll share with you an update to pricing and promotions on Udemy as well as next steps for you.Current
Pricing
Students are Confused by Inconsistent Pricing
Today, prices are inconsistent and complicated for students. List prices range from $9 to $300, but the reality is that 90% of sales occur with a coupon code, and at a price less than $50. Students have been telling us how much they’re willing to spend for an online course, but we haven’t been listening as well as we should. We want pricing to be accessible and intuitive for students – to serve as an easy entry into learning, not a barrier.
Instructors are Frustrated by Constant Discounts
I’ve heard directly from you, our instructor community, that our promotions train students to wait for the lowest price and lead to an erosion of your average selling price. This has also encouraged inflated list prices, which makes it difficult for you to generate organic sales, and we’ve heard from many of you that deep discounts hurt your brands.
New Pricing
Reducing Discounts and Increasing Trust: Updating our Pricing
To address student and instructor concerns, today we’re announcing changes to pricing and promotions on Udemy. First, discounts, for both Udemy and instructor coupons, will be capped at 50% off.
Additionally, we’re announcing a change to list prices on Udemy: list prices will be capped at $50. This, combined with the reduction in discounts, will help keep courses accessible for students going forward. Effective April 4, 2016:
  • Courses on Udemy will be priced between $20 and $50; we will also continue to support free courses. Please see our Global Price Matrix for localized ranges.
  • Each course price will be individually set by the instructor between $20-$50, within $5 increments.
  • Course discounts, for both Udemy coupons and instructor coupons, will be capped at 50% off; we will also continue to support free coupons.

We need a pricing model that combines both instructors’ desire to minimize discounts with students’ desire for fair and consistent pricing. We believe that combining lower list prices with smaller discounts will help ensure that Udemy remains a sustainable and accessible marketplace for both instructors and students for years to come.

What does this mean for all of us online instructors? It means we need to work with this new system, instead of against it. I will prove my own personal strategies in step 3 of this blog post!
After looking at my own sales data a majority of people were willing to buy my online courses at $10 to $25 dollars. I think this is why Udemy is going to this new pricing strategy and I believe it will work moving forward!
2) March 2016 Promotion Strategies and when to change the prices of your Udemy courses
Since today is March 7th and the new pricing system will not be in place until April 4th, this offers us instructors a unique opportunity to promote our courses. Why? Because $1 to $9 coupons and coupons with massive discounts (Anything beyond 50%) will cease to exist past April 4th.
My suggestion is to leave your courses the same price as they are today and not adapt the new system until April 4th. Why?
a) Udemy is still running its discount promotions in the month of March (I have received a ton of March affiliate sales so far!)
b) This will be the last chance (possible ever) to receive full price purchases of your Udemy courses! I received one as an affiliate sale already this month!
c) Run a massive $9.00 course super sale all the way until April 3rd or 4th. This new pricing system creates wonderful leverage to discount our courses below the future prices. As described above 50% will be the biggest discount moving forward and if your courses are the minimum $20 then $10 is the absolute lowest price for a course ever again on Udemy. So if we create and use our coupons below this mark ($9.00) as a super special I would image a lot of students would like this and want to buy our courses at this price!
3) Pricing strategies for the future and beyond here on Udemy! 
So what are our options moving forward here on Udemy? What should I charge for my courses moving forward? This will be a difficult question to answer because the conversion data for your Udemy courses is certainly going to be different than the conversion data for mine! According to Udemy my courses are selling at around the average of $20 (with some of my bestsellers at around $25 on average). This means that I will most likely choose to list all of my courses at $20 to start and some of my bestsellers at perhaps $25. This will hopefully lead to more sales and will help me against my competition who will be selling similar courses but perhaps at a higher price? Only time will tell but I think this is going to bring in more students (especially organically) and put more money in our pockets as instructors! A Win Win for Everyone!
These are just a few ways you can take advantage of the new Udemy Pricing System and cash in on this unique opportunity!

Case Study 2/29/2016 How To Create High Quality Online Videos Using Affordable Software!

Hello everyone and welcome to yet another online teaching case study! In this weeks case study, we are going to be discussing: How To Create The Highest Quality Videos Possible For Your Online Video Courses!
I will be discussing three main areas and showing you specific examples from my own online courses! The three main areas we will be discussing in this post are:
1) What Video Editing Software You Should Look At Investing In To Create High Quality Videos
2) The Benefits and Differences Between Filming Indoors & Outdoors
3) Taking Your Videos To The Next Level By Adding Text/Pictures/Overlay

We are first going to be discussing What Video Editing Software You Should Use and Invest In.
When I first started teaching online I used quicktime screen capture software (Mac computer, free software) and a Blue Snowball USB microphone.
I also used iMovie to edit the screen capture videos (free Mac Editing Software)

Needless to say these were the absolute bare essentials to creating an online video course. In the past year my video editing skills and video recording skills have evolved immensely!

I have invested in using a new video editing software called Final Cut Pro X! They have a 30 day free trial and then after that it costs $299.00 to buy the full version.

Without going into to much detail about the specifics of how Final cut Pro works, this new editing software has allowed me creating amazing looking videos shot form all around the world! Here are a few examples of Finished videos with Final Cut Pro X!
I highly recommend using Final Cut Pro X as a vital investment into creating professional looking videos for your online courses!
If you are a Windows user (or Mac User) another comparable software editing system is Camtasia Studio! I personally have not worked with this video editing software, but have heard very good things and have seen some excellent videos edited using this software.

Camtasia also has a free trial option and costs right around the same as Final Cut Pro X does for the full version ($299.00 for Camtasia 8)

2) The Benefits and Differences Between Filming Indoors & Outdoors

Now that we have an idea of what software editing program we need its time to go out and start shooting some videos! I have create a whole blog post on which Cameras I recommend, so we will skip that for now, but I wanted to share my experience filing indoors (with a green screen) vs. filming outdoors (in nature/public places)
Filming indoors:
The Pro’s
There are a lot of different reasons why filming indoors is a great way to create high quality videos. First, you really do not have to worry about any weather conditions, (unless your power get cut off) or microphone issues (as long as you are in a quite room without background noises). Second, filming indoors can be very comfortable as most people will be likely filming in their own homes or a professional studio. Third, setting up and recording should be easy once you have everything in line and set up! Here is an example of me using my green screen indoors! It was worth the effort to learn these skills!
The Con’s
Setting up and getting all of the lighting/equipment to work perfectly can be a pain in the neck. I remeber it taking me hours to finally have everything set up the way I liked it the first time I filmed indoors! Second, you are limited to what you can do indoors. It’s not like you can move around a lot on screen because you are in a fixed area. Third, you may only be able to film during certain times (maybe you live with a roommate/family/ect and you cannot film in a certain area at a certain time).
Filming Outdoors: 
The Pro’s
You can really engage and inspire your students by filming outdoors! Some of my bestselling courses have multiple lectures where I film outdoors! You also have a lot of flexibility when filming outdoors! You can move around more, get different angles, and shoot almost anywhere at anytime! Here is an awesome example of me filming outdoors!
The Con’s 
Weather can always be a big factor when trying to film outdoors. When its cloudy, windy, or even rainy/cold, mother nature can ruin your video before you even begin! Always be aware of the current weather before starting your video shoot!
3) Taking Your Videos To The Next Level By Adding Text/Pictures/Overlay
A wonderful way to engage your students and enhance your videos is byAdding Text/Pictures/Overlay to your videos! Using your new software there may be multiple different ways to do this, however let me show you a few examples from my own videos!
Here you see I have added simple text “Special Bonus” to my video to have it look more professional!
In this picture I have a video inside of a vide using the picture in picture option!
These are just a few way you can make your videos more engaging, professional, and take them to the next level!
