Case Study 7/22/2016 Marketing Tips and Strategies on Skillshare

Hello everyone and welcome to yet another online teaching case study! In this week’s case study, we are going to be discussing Marketing strategies on Skillshare!

Recently I have been uploading a lot of my courses onto other platforms, especially Skillshare. In my very first month teaching on Skillshare I was able to enroll more than 2,500+ students and earn more than $2,200 in royalties!

In this blog post I wanted to share with you a one marketing strategy that will help you when creating your Skillshare courses!

Marketing Strategy #1: Should I Create A Smaller Course Or A Bigger Course On Skillshare?

Skillshare recommends Smaller bite-sized courses but they key to any course is the QUALITY of Teaching and the QUALITY of video. If you have a lot of smaller courses but the QUALTY is lacking, your courses will not do very well. Same goes for a bigger course. If you have a really big course, but the QULITY is not very good, students will give you poor ratings and the course ultimately will fail.

So, whether creating a large course or a smaller course, QUALITY will always trump either.

But.. I didn’t exactly answer the question. Longer courses or Shorter courses? While both have its advantages and disadvantages, I would learn towards creating smaller courses on Skillshare. Here is why:

1)    The more courses you have on Skillshare the more premium enrollments you can get from the same student.

It doesn’t cost your premium student any more money to enroll in additional premium classes of yours, but you do earn more for each premium enrollment in your courses! Simple math says that if you get 1 premium student to enroll in 10 of your courses, that 10 premium enrollments for you. Compared to that same student just enrolling in 1 “master class” if you decided to create a very big course.

2)    When taking online courses people do not want to watch hours and hours of video in one sitting

Most people wanting to learn online want to learn right away and quickly! With so much information at our fingertips these days students do not like watching hours or tutorials. Rather 20-30 minutes, learn something new, and then move onto the next thing to learn! Keep this in mind when creating your Skillshare courses!

3)    Students feel a sense of accomplishment when they complete a course!

It always feels good when we finish something! With a shorter course you can give your students that feeling more often! And this also keeps your students coming back and wanting more!

So to re-cap, I think creating smaller, bite sized, courses on Skillshare is the way to go (for now J)

I hope you have enjoyed this week’s case study! There are many ways to begin teaching online, but this should give you some great ideas that have worked for myself and many other online instructors! Stay tuned next week where I discuss more online teaching strategies.

Case Study 5/25/2016 Promoting on Youtube and Beyond!

Hello everyone and welcome to yet another online teaching case study! In this week’s case study, we are going to be discussing how to use Youtube and Your own Website To Boost Online Course Sales!
Since sales have slowed down and our own promotion on Udemy are not half of what they use to be, a lot of online instructors have begun their own marketing campaigns to dive in additional sales. I myself have build my very own Youtube channel and wanted to discuss how things have been going.
My channel (Joe Parys Academy) is a Youtube channel dedicated to helping teach as many people online as possible. My goal is to give away free preview videos to all of my bestselling online courses. This creates a win/win situation. First off, the view gets an awesome free video tutorial. Second, I get a chance to market my videos on an amazing platform and potential upsell my videos. Here is a screen shot of the beginning stages of my Youtube Channel.
As you can see I have just started the channel, but already I can see the enormous value! In one of my videos I had over 6 hours minutes viewed the very first day, and I made a full price sale directly from the link in my Youtube description! Now, I only have 9 subscribers and I am still in the process of building my channel, but I can say it’s a great place to get started making some extra sales and marketing your online courses.
Another place I am now selling my courses and giving away free courses is on my own Website!
This has proven to be a bit more of a challenge and I am still building my website as well, but the potential seems to just as great! If students find my website they will be able to enroll in my courses directly on Udemy using my own coupon codes! This again creates a massive win/win situation where I earn 97% and the students save 50% off my courses! Feel free Enroll in my free courses by going to my website! Enjoy!

I hope you have enjoyed this week’s case study! There are many ways to begin teaching online, but this should give you some great ideas that have worked for myself and many other online instructors! Stay tuned next week where I discuss more online teaching strategies.

Case Study 5/18/2016 Keywords and Search Terms For Online Instructors!

Hello everyone and welcome to yet another online teaching case study! In this week’s case study, we are going to be discussing Keywords and Search Terms For Online Instructors!

Last night I just received an email from a student who visited my website. He said that it was a little difficult navigating around my course and he needed a “search” bar to find the courses he was looking for. This made me think of an excellent topic to discuss in this weeks case study!

How many sales are you losing out on because your course is not being found by the right students?! This is why keywords and search terms are very important to your online teaching success. So what are some great keywords and search terms to use when thinking about your title and subtitles in your next courses?

Here is a list of some of th most searched for terms on Google:

Weather, Translate, Maps, Calculator, News, Youtube, Restaurants, Movies, Calendar, Speed Test

Now, these are pretty random and may not be applicable to our online courses, but lets look a level deeper and explore why these terms are being searched.

Most people are looking for instant results and answers. This is why people will search for weather on their computers. Also, weather is something that is important to a lot of people! So when it comes to creating headlines, titles, and descriptions for your online courses, think about what your student is going to NEED and also is IMPORTANT to them!

Here are some examples from my best selling courses:

The Complete PHP Course With Bootstrap3 CMS System & Admin Panel

The Complete Online Teaching Masterclass: Teach Online Today!

The Complete Android Developer Course: Beginner To Advanced!

Using these three examples I have the keywords “The Complete” in every example. Why? This tells students that the course is very comprehensive! When students search for courses they want something complete and comprehensive. Also, I use words like Android, Teach, Masterclass PHP Course, Ect. So that students who use these keywords will be more likely to find my courses as well.

It is important to understand and using as many “keywords” that people are commonly searching for in order to get the best results possible! I suggest using google trends to help you with the most common keywords and think hard about which keywords your courses will use to stand out from!

I hope you have enjoyed this week’s case study! There are many ways to begin teaching online, but this should give you some great ideas that have worked for myself and many other online instructors! Stay tuned next week where I discuss more online teaching strategies.

Case Study 5/10/2016 How To Create A Udemy Bestseller!

Hello everyone and welcome to yet another online teaching case study! In this week’s case study, we are going to be discussing Udemy Hot Topics and how to create your next bestselling course

Mentioned in last week’s blog, Last month (APRIL 2016) Has been my slowest month on Udemy (revenue wise) In the past 6 months!

This means its time to step up our course creation! In this blog post you will discover the secrets to creating an awesome online course here on Udemy. I will discuss 3 main tips to help you get a bestseller up and running here on Udemy!

Let’s dive in!

Here are the essentials to almost every excellent course here on Udemy

1)    The Course is A “Hot Topic

This means that there are a lot of people looking to enroll in the course and the subject is in demand. An example would by me PHP or Android courses which have over 20,000+ students enrolled in them!

2)    100+ Good reviews

We have discussed how the review system has changed and now more than ever it is very important to have more than 100+ positive reviews. This is because the volume of reviews being written are increasing! So we need to increase our positive reviews. How do we do this? Check out my previous blog article!

3)    Course discussions & Minutes viewed are being generated every weeks

Udemy is moving torward looking at the data in your courses! Specifically those course who have a lot of discussions being generated and minutes being watched! Youtube does the exact same thing and I thing Udemy is moving toward using this as a benchmark as well!

I hope you have enjoyed this week’s case study! There are many ways to begin teaching online, but this should give you some great ideas that have worked for myself and many other online instructors! Stay tuned next week where I discuss more online teaching strategies.

Case Study 3/28/2016 Writing Your Course Summary!

Hello everyone and welcome to yet another online teaching case study! In this weeks case study, we are going to be discussing: Your Udemy Course Summary & Course Goals!
In this weeks case study I am going to show you some of the best examples I have seen on Udemy and also why they are very effective! I am also going to show you my own course summaries and how you can model your course summary after mine!
Let’s get started!
Recently I was watching a youtube video by one of the top paid individual instructors here on Udemy, Alun Hill. In his video, Alun breaks down what has been working for his own course summaries on Udemy! Here is what Alun discusses:
#1) Udemy suggest that we have a minimum, yes minimum, of 300 words for our course summary. Now, I personally believe that sometimes “less is more” meaning is someone really going to read a 5,000 word course summary? Well, the answer is YES they actually probably are if they are really interested in enrolling in the course! This means it is critical to add in as much as we can to our course summary page (without overdoing it folks). Here is an example from my Bestselling Confidence and Self-Esteem Course! As you will notice I have added multiple positive reviews and have been very detailed about what my students are going to receive by enrolling in this course!

#2) Don’t just write anything! Make it actionable
Now, it is important to drive home the point that you need to make your course summary very actionable and inspiring! Don’t just write things and mark things down to get your “word count” up. It’s important for your works to have meaning and to help your students make the decision to enroll in your fabulous course!
#3) Make sure to include Udemy’s 30 Day Money Back Guarantee in Your Course Summary!

Udemy offers each one of its students a 30 day money back guarantee when they enroll in your courses. This is a major advantage that you should make your students very aware of! — “But Joe, if people know they can get their money back, wont this lead to more refunds?” The answer is “not really!” in fact, every month my refunds have been less than 3% of my total sales! However, knowing that students can get their money back, no questions asked, provides them a safety net and encourages them to take the risk and enroll in your course!
Here is the link to Udemy’s 30 day money back guarantee policy:
#4) Make sure to include your total student count and reviews!
This is a great social proof marketing tool and at the very top of each of my personal courses I include total students enrolling in my courses and how many positive reviews I have received! Here is an example of what this looks like in my course summary for my Android course which now has more than 18,000+ Students!

I hope you have enjoyed this weeks case study! There are many ways to begin teaching online, but this should give you some great ideas that have worked for myself and many other online instructors! Stay tuned next week were I discuss more online teaching strategies.

Case Study 3/21/16 Why Traveling Helps Your Online Teaching!

Hello everyone and welcome to yet another online teaching case study! In this weeks case study, we are going to be discussing: Why Traveling Helps Your Online Teaching!
I will be discussing and showing you specific examples from my own traveling experience! Here I am in beautiful Orange Country California!
Let’s Get Started!
So why am I sharing my own personal traveling story here with you today? Because traveling has enhanced my online teaching 100 fold!
In fact, some of my best selling online video courses have been from videos shot all around the world!
Recently I have discovered how easy it is to create high quality videos simply using my iPhone 6S plus! I simply plugged in my microphone, fired up my FiLMMIC PRO App (available for only $10.00 on the app store) and grabbed my “selfie stick” and I was instantly able to create awesome videos!
Here is a screenshot from a video I filmed on the beach this weekend!
In addition to creating high quality videos while traveling, showing your students around new environments stimulates their learning and inspires them to learn more! I know from personal experience that when I saw an instructor teaching from a “cool” location, it inspired me to create that lifestyle for myself!
And Well, it looks like I am on the right track :)
What is also so great about traveling is that it enhances your worldly view. With over 100,000+ students now from over 185 countries world wide, its important for me as an instructor to get out their and see the world (as best as I can) through my students eyes! The best way to do this is to get out their and start traveling!
This weekend I was able to visit Orange County, Los Angels, Palm Springs, Tempe, and Phoenix all in the same week! Its amazing how different things are even from just one state to another! I have also been able to travel to Greece, Hawaii, Canada, Mexico, The Bahamas, St. Thomas, St. Martin, and many other places!
Traveling and Teaching has never been so easy, and with technology the way it is today you can work from pretty much anywhere at anytime! I hope this post inspires you and if you have any questions please feel free to message me anytime!
I hope you have enjoyed this weeks case study! There are many ways to begin teaching online, but this should give you some great ideas that have worked for myself and many other online instructors! Stay tuned next week were I discuss more online teaching strategies.

Case Study 3/7/2016 Udemy’s New Pricing System!

I will be discussing three major topics in this blog post. The three main areas we will be discussing in this post are:
1) My reaction to the new pricing system and how it will affect my own courses moving forward
2) March 2016 Promotion Strategies and when to change the prices of your Udemy courses
3) Pricing strategies for the future and beyond here on Udemy!
Let’s Get Started!
1) My reaction to the new Udemy Pricing System
My first reaction to the new pricing system was complete “shock and disbelief”. “Only $50 as a maximum? $20 minimum? Seems like such a small range and wont everyone choose the same prices now?”
But once I did my research and read more as to “why” Udemy was doing this, I began to understand and think that it will benefit everyone moving forward! Incase you have not heard about the new pricing system, here is the email sent out by CEO Dennis Yang March 2nd, 2016:
“Hello Instructors,
Over the past few months, we have spoken with many of you on the phone and in person. Thank you for sharing with us. One topic has come up again and again throughout these conversations: our pricing. In this email I’ll share with you an update to pricing and promotions on Udemy as well as next steps for you.Current
Pricing
Students are Confused by Inconsistent Pricing
Today, prices are inconsistent and complicated for students. List prices range from $9 to $300, but the reality is that 90% of sales occur with a coupon code, and at a price less than $50. Students have been telling us how much they’re willing to spend for an online course, but we haven’t been listening as well as we should. We want pricing to be accessible and intuitive for students – to serve as an easy entry into learning, not a barrier.
Instructors are Frustrated by Constant Discounts
I’ve heard directly from you, our instructor community, that our promotions train students to wait for the lowest price and lead to an erosion of your average selling price. This has also encouraged inflated list prices, which makes it difficult for you to generate organic sales, and we’ve heard from many of you that deep discounts hurt your brands.
New Pricing
Reducing Discounts and Increasing Trust: Updating our Pricing
To address student and instructor concerns, today we’re announcing changes to pricing and promotions on Udemy. First, discounts, for both Udemy and instructor coupons, will be capped at 50% off.
Additionally, we’re announcing a change to list prices on Udemy: list prices will be capped at $50. This, combined with the reduction in discounts, will help keep courses accessible for students going forward. Effective April 4, 2016:
  • Courses on Udemy will be priced between $20 and $50; we will also continue to support free courses. Please see our Global Price Matrix for localized ranges.
  • Each course price will be individually set by the instructor between $20-$50, within $5 increments.
  • Course discounts, for both Udemy coupons and instructor coupons, will be capped at 50% off; we will also continue to support free coupons.
Learn More
We need a pricing model that combines both instructors’ desire to minimize discounts with students’ desire for fair and consistent pricing. We believe that combining lower list prices with smaller discounts will help ensure that Udemy remains a sustainable and accessible marketplace for both instructors and students for years to come.
We all believe that people everywhere should have access to the skills and courses necessary to build the lives they imagine for themselves. This belief is why I joined Udemy, and why so many of you teach. I’m honored to work alongside you, and our entire team is standing by to answer any questions you might have. If you’d like to set up some time to speak, please fill out this form.
At this time we ask that you view this post for the next steps you need to take, as well as a more detailed explanation of this change. We’re thrilled to partner with all of you on this journey, and we couldn’t be more optimistic about our future together.
Dennis Yang
CEO, Udemy”
What does this mean for all of us online instructors? It means we need to work with this new system, instead of against it. I will prove my own personal strategies in step 3 of this blog post!
After looking at my own sales data a majority of people were willing to buy my online courses at $10 to $25 dollars. I think this is why Udemy is going to this new pricing strategy and I believe it will work moving forward!
2) March 2016 Promotion Strategies and when to change the prices of your Udemy courses
Since today is March 7th and the new pricing system will not be in place until April 4th, this offers us instructors a unique opportunity to promote our courses. Why? Because $1 to $9 coupons and coupons with massive discounts (Anything beyond 50%) will cease to exist past April 4th.
My suggestion is to leave your courses the same price as they are today and not adapt the new system until April 4th. Why?
a) Udemy is still running its discount promotions in the month of March (I have received a ton of March affiliate sales so far!)
b) This will be the last chance (possible ever) to receive full price purchases of your Udemy courses! I received one as an affiliate sale already this month!
c) Run a massive $9.00 course super sale all the way until April 3rd or 4th. This new pricing system creates wonderful leverage to discount our courses below the future prices. As described above 50% will be the biggest discount moving forward and if your courses are the minimum $20 then $10 is the absolute lowest price for a course ever again on Udemy. So if we create and use our coupons below this mark ($9.00) as a super special I would image a lot of students would like this and want to buy our courses at this price!
3) Pricing strategies for the future and beyond here on Udemy!
So what are our options moving forward here on Udemy? What should I charge for my courses moving forward? This will be a difficult question to answer because the conversion data for your Udemy courses is certainly going to be different than the conversion data for mine! According to Udemy my courses are selling at around the average of $20 (with some of my bestsellers at around $25 on average). This means that I will most likely choose to list all of my courses at $20 to start and some of my bestsellers at perhaps $25. This will hopefully lead to more sales and will help me against my competition who will be selling similar courses but perhaps at a higher price? Only time will tell but I think this is going to bring in more students (especially organically) and put more money in our pockets as instructors! A Win Win for Everyone!
These are just a few ways you can take advantage of the new Udemy Pricing System and cash in on this unique opportunity!
I hope you have enjoyed this weeks case study! There are many ways to begin teaching online, but this should give you some great ideas that have worked for myself and many other online instructors! Stay tuned next week were I discuss more online teaching strategies.

Case Study 2/22/2016 – The New Udemy Review System is Here!

Hello everyone and welcome to yet another online teaching case study! In this weeks case study, we are going to be discussing The New Udemy Review System!
I will be discussing three main areas and showing you specific examples from my own online courses! The three main areas we will be discussing in this post are:
1) What Are The New Changes To The Review System
2) How Can We Work With The New Review System To Create A Win/Win Situation
3) How To Continue To Create High Quality Courses To Combat Negative Reviews
Let’s get started!
1) What Are The New Changes To The Review System
The first major change that both Jerry and I have noticed is that you can now reply DIRECTLY to someones review! This is a great new feature! In Jerrys last email he shows you exactly how to do this. Incase you missed it, here are the screenshots below!
How do you get to reviews? Go to instructor dashboard on the top bar next to my courses.
Next select the reviews tab
You can then filter based upon star levels
Every review has a “respond” button on it! This makes it very easy to respond directly to that persons review!
Here is an example of a review that I have responded to in my newest android course!
The second thing that I noticed is that students can now rate courses with .5 or half star ratings! I got one of my first half star ratings just a few hours ago!
4.5 Stars!

The third major change to the review system is that Udemy now has 3 different checkpoints in which it will specifically be asking your for a review! (a beginning, middle, and ending checkpoint).

Here is what that looks like at the very first checkpoint which takes place very early on in the course!

These changes have instantly boosted and created more reviews almost overnight! This is a very exciting time to see how this new review system will work in the future months to come!

2) How Can We Work With The New Review System To Create A Win/Win Situation
The best way to maximize your experience as a Udemy instructor is to work WITH the new review system, instead of resisting AGAINST it. This creates a WIN/WIN situation for Udemy and yourself as the instructor!
Here are a few tips:
1) Be adaptable and willing to work with the new system. Don’t fight against it!
2) Use the new review system to your advantage! Spend the time getting to know/learn the new system
3) Focus on the areas you like about the new system, instead of the areas that bother you!
Here are some additional suggestions from Jerry Banfield on how to respond to reviews to create better situations for everyone!
“Here are a few tips for responding to reviews generally based on what I am doing today.
  • Responding to the top negative review on each course is my first priority. With 47 courses and 132 one and two star reviews, not all reviews are created equal. The reviews buyers are most likely to see are the most important for me to respond to because that is where I can hope to most effectively reach a potential student. This means now I will try to respond to every new one and two star review as soon as I see it.
  • Responding to older reviews that are not on the first page of reviews can be done steadily over time until every one of them has a response. Some buyers will read as many reviews as possible and the older reviews often provide a great chance to convert especially when the response is newer.
  • Responding to a review shows students you are actively watching the course and keeping it updated. This as a buyer is very important for me to see the instructor is participating in the course because I want to know I can get answers to my questions in the course.” -Jerry Banfield
3) How To Continue To Create High Quality Courses To Combat Negative Reviews
The key (especially now with this new review system) to getting higher reviews and ratings is to actually go back to the fundamentals and create high quality online videos courses! Also, allowing an abundance of new students to try your course is a great way to boost your reviews! Here are a few tips I will be trying with the new system in place:
1) Allowing lots of free students into my course to drive additional reviews
2) Having my first lectures be of the highest quality to set the tone in the course and give students as great reason to provide 5 star reviews
3) Responding to as many negative reviews as possible and trying to resolve the issues by making my courses better, not by trying to change the reviews opinion! Nothing beats an awesome course :)
I hope you have enjoyed this weeks case study! There are many ways to begin teaching online, but this should give you some great ideas that have worked for myself and many other online instructors! Stay tuned next week were I discuss more online teaching strategies.

Case Study: 1/25/2016 How To Increase Student Engagement In Your Online Courses!

Hello everyone and welcome to yet another online teaching case study! In this weeks case study, we are going to be discussing student engagement and how it affects your online courses. This case study was actually inspired by student feedback on how to engage more students and to have them participate more in our online courses.
I will be discussing three main areas to help you engage more of your students and show you specific examples from my own online courses! The three main areas we will be discussing in this post are:
1) How To Get Your Students To Participate in Your Online Course Discussion Board and How To Generate Engaging Discussions Online!
2) How To Have Your Students Consume More of Your Videos (average viewing time)
3) How To Keep Students Coming Back For More and Re-Engaging Your Students Once They Have Finished Your Course.
There are many different ways to answer these questions above. However, I will for times sakes stick the ones that have produced the best results for myself and many other online instructors.
Let’s Go ahead and start with our first topic:
1) How To Get Your Students To Participate in Your Online Course Discussion Board and How To Generate Engaging Discussions Online!
In my own personal experience teaching online one of the best ways to have your students post on your discussion board is to have them introduce themselves to their classmates and write a short message telling everyone about themselves! We all love talk about ourselves and share who we are don’t we? I know one of the main reasons I became a teacher is because I love sharing my life and personal experiences with others. I also really enjoy helping them get amazing results in their life! Teaching and sharing who we are with others is priceless! So I have implemented this strategy in many of my online courses and there have been many students who have participated!
Here is a excellent example from my Free Course on how to start building your confidence and self-esteem!
Below you will find pictures how I ask students to talk about themselves and introduce themselves to myself and their classmates! I Give (and talk) about who I am (showing an example) and then ask the students to do the same. Check out the screen shots below!
(Lecture #2 Titled: Please Introduce Yourself To Your Classmates and I!)
Here is the text lecture for you to see exactly how I ask for students to participate!
So, what are the results? I have students almost everyday post on my course discussion board!
This screenshots (I cut out names and made the students anonymous for privacy reasons) will show you my student engagement! It is also very fun to see and hear from my students all across the world!
Now there are many more discussion posts just like this, but for times sakes and to make this reading friendly I have just added one screenshot! I encourage you to try something like this out in one of your online courses today!
2) How To Have Your Students Consume More of Your Videos (average viewing time)
Lets now discuss how we can engage our students and have them view and consume more content in our videos!
Video engagement (minutes watched ect.) is tracked online and can be found on Udemy and many other online platforms.
The key is to have above average minutes viewed in your online courses! Here is an example from my bestselling Evernote Course on Udemy
As you can see, I have above average ratings and above average minutes consumed per active student. These two things combined help lead to a top paid bestselling online video course!
Here is another example from my bestselling Transform Your Confidence and Self-Esteem course!

As you can see I have above average ratings and minutes watched in this top paid bestselling course as well!

So i’m sure you asking yourself “now Joe, how do we actually get our students to watch our courses and consume the minutes!”
Great question and here is the best answer I can provide for you based on my own experience:
Create A Really High Quality Course!
There are many different factors that go into this, but I will recommend using high end equipment to record your courses (you don’t have to break the bank either, I started with  $50.00 microphone and a slow Mac Mini Computer!) and also having great content in your course… AKA some really useful information! This will help engage your students and keep them watching your courses longer! The two courses (Evernote and Self-Esteem) are my highest quality courses and their engagement results mirror their quality!
3) How To Keep Students Coming Back For More and Re-Engaging Your Students Once They Have Finished Your Course.
What happens to your students once they finish your online course? Do they ever come back? How should we go about re-engaging those students? Great question. The single best way to re-engage the students who have finished your course is to add in FRESH NEW CONTENT to your course! You can do this by adding in additional videos/ esources/posts/articles/ ect. This is effective for a few reasons:
1) They get to learn more and have to come back to your course in order to do so. Students love learning more on a subject, especially when you keep things up to date!
2) They might want to / have to re-watch previous lectures to understand the new content which will re-engage them back in the course.
3) They will re-watch the course again as a refresher and re-engage themselves since they enjoyed the course the first time through!
A great way to let your students know about new content once you have uploaded it is to send out an educational announcement or email to your students!  Here is an example from my JavaScript Course! Many students were very thankful :)

I hope you have enjoyed this weeks case study! There are many more ways to engage your students and perhaps I will do a Part II next week with more examples, but this should give you some great ideas that have worked for myself and many other online instructors!

Case Study 1/11/2016 How To Promote Your Courses On Udemy and Earn Thousands!

In this weeks case study I am going to discuss how you can begin to earn more from each of your Udemy courses by promoting directly on Udemy! The inspiration for this weeks blog post has come from student feedback and other instructors asking me how I am able to earn thousands each and every month promoting my courses and re-marketing them! Here is last months revenues promoting directly on Udemy!
December 2015 Promotion Activity:
So how was I able to drive in more than $3,000 in promotional sales last month? Let me give you 3 strategies that have worked very well for me and for many other instructors here on Udemy.
1) Picking A Price Point: How Much Should I Charge When Promoting My Courses On Udemy?
This question comes up all of the time in the Udemy studio and is often debated between many instructors. I would just like to say first that there is no “correct” or “one size fits all” answer to this question. However, through my own testing of many different price points ($9, $10, $12, $14, $15, $19, $29) I have discovered that $9.00 coupons seem to work the best when re-marketing and promoting to our existing students on Udemy. I believe this price point is currently working the best for the following reasons:
  • A majority of students who have already bought one or more of your courses most likely did so at the discounted $10.00 price point. Some may have paid $15.00 or $19.00 but Udemy’s most popular price point has consistently been $10.00. Knowing this, it does not make much sense for a student who has enrolled for $10.00 to enroll in another one of your courses for $19.00 or $29.00 if they know and understand Udemy will eventually run another $10.00 flash sale promotion. Are there exceptions to this? Absolutely. This is just research based on my own personal experience.
  • $9.00 Coupons are a better deal! It’s human nature to want to find the best deal isn’t it? I know for me personally I am willing to spend the extra 5 minutes to save even a dollar or two if I can. Why? Because we all love getting a good deal! It’s an ego thing really, its not much about saving the $1-2 dollars (even though it does add up!) :) So by offering $9.00 coupons you are offing the best “deal in town” (slightly better than Udemy’s own $10.00 sales) which is more enticing and will most likely sell better.
  • WARNING: DO NOT DROP BELOW $9.00 COUPONS! I have not mentioned any coupons below the $9.00 price point because I believe you will be losing not only money, but also credibility with your courses. If you want to “give your courses away” I.E. at a $3.00 coupon or $5.00 or even $7.00 coupon, why not just give them away for free? I have given away thousands of FREE coupons and still believe in this strategy, but when it comes to marketing and promoting I just think anything below $9.00 is a losing strategy because once you drop to a certain point students will anticipate that price point again and delay buying your courses! Again, Just my personal opinion :)
2) How To Build A 63,000+ Student Email List To Cross Promote and Market To!
When it comes to getting more promotional sales on Udemy it always helps to have a lot of students to re-target!
How do we effectively do this? I would encourage reads to go back and read my previous blog post because I discuss FREE coupons in more depth. However, the more “free students” you give coupons to, the more chances you have to sell them a new course! Also, if you have been very generous, many of these “free students” turn into paying students! A Win Win for everyone :)
Also, when you have more free students it build your credibility, you have a better chance of driving in more of your own sales, and then Udemy starts to promote and market your courses which drives in even more paid students to re-market to! This create a massive sales funnel and can really help you drive in more and more sales!
3) Understand and Learn Marketing Psychology!
When marketing anything in life it is very important to understand who you are marketing to and to target your audience. I have a variety of different courses on subjects such as web development, music, google analytics, goal setting, and even Evernote! Ask yourself, would it make a lot of sense to try and sell my “how to build a website course” to my music students? Or my music course to my “how to build a website” students? Most likely not. Why? Because web development students are most likely not interested in learning about music. Some of them might be, but more of them would be willing to buy my next shorter niche web development course. Use this knowledge and strategy to your advantage and carefully re-target your courses!
Also, knowing and understanding marketing psychology is very important. I have a degree in psychology so I understand many of these principles, but I would highly recommend looking into marketing psychology strategies to boost your promotional sales here on Udemy!
